The Japanese language classes are divided into two categories: Spoken Japanese and Japanese Reading and Writing. This separation allows students to concentrate fully yet independently on the two distinct areas of Japanese language acquisition.

These courses are taught by a full complement of native Japanese language instructors who combine years of experience with a unique ability to simplify a language that has been viewed as one of the most difficult languages to learn.

The five-credit hour Spoken Japanese language course is required of all program participants. Each 50-minute class meets five times a week and is limited to 10-15 students per class, allowing instructors to devote close attention to each student. On the other hand, the Japanese Reading and Writing course meets three times a week to ensures smooth language progression. While this course is not required, those students who wish to stay at Kansai Gaidai for one academic year are strongly encouraged to enroll in this course. All students must adhere to the Japanese Language Class Policy in taking our Japanese classes.

In addition to class room instruction, most students spend a great deal of time in the language and computer labs, where they learn through language tapes, Japanese films, and computer programs, many developed by Japanese language instructors at Kansai Gaidai.

The level of language course will be determined according to the placement tests given during the orientation period.
