Studio Art Courses

3 credits for each course

Students who come into the Japanese brush painting (sumi-e) or the pottery studios enter a whole new world. The tatami floor, low desks, fude, suzuri, tokono-ma, fusuma, and shoji of the Japanese brush painting class - and the ceramic studio, mounds of moist clay, glazes, and the kiln make these two courses special in sight, sound, and even smell.

Our instructors for both courses are recognized artists in their fields and have years of teaching experience. The beauty of the studio courses is that students may, for example, enter the sumi-e course, never having seen a horse hair's brush (fude) before, and after fifteen weeks of intensive work, become proficient enough to paint, and back a work for an exhibition. The semi-annual end of semester exhibition of student works is the highlight of both courses.

IMPORTANT!: No student, under any circumstances, is permitted to take the Ceramics and the Japanese Brush Painting classes at the same time, nor register for an increased load of either one.
