The Asian Studies Program at Kansai Gaidai was never intended to be self-supporting, and therefore tuition payments and fees do not cover the total cost of the program. The difference is made up by a continuing subsidy from the University to the substantial benefit of the students.

It is true that living expenses in Japan are relatively high. However, the program has been making efforts in securing scholarships from the Japanese government and the University for participating students to ease their financial difficulties. The following sections provide detailed information about finance and scholarships for prospective students:

In your payments to Kansai Gaidai, the following should be carefully noted:

  1. Fees are payable on a semester basis.
  2. Payment of all academic fees and expenses must be completed before or during the orientation program each semester.
  3. No personal checks, personal money orders can be accepted in any of your payments to Kansai Gaidai. It is highly recommended that students pay the fees by credit card (except for tuition payment), wire transfer or with cash/traveler's checks.
  4. While tuition is payable either in US dollars or Japanese yen, all other fees are to be paid only in yen currency.

Personal Expenditures

Since activities and dining can be rather costly in Japan, all participants are strongly advised to bring adequate funds for their stay at Kansai Gaidai. Particularly for the first semester, adjustment to the new environment takes a good deal of time and effort, and the burden of part-time employment in addition to normal study loads simply makes it very difficult for students to fulfill their academic responsibilities.
Furthermore, due to Japan's immigration laws, international students are not allowed to engage in part-time employment unless they secure permission from the Immigration Office. Therefore, we must stress that participating students should not rely on possible compensation from part-time jobs to finance their budgets at Kansai Gaidai. The following are rough estimates for personal expenditures for ONE SEMESTER. For one academic year, the estimates will be approximately twice that of one semester. Approximately 100,000 yen (room and board included) for winter break expenses must also be added. The quotations do not include personal travel inside/outside of Japan. The figures, of course, vary according to each individual. Dollar quotations in parenthesis below are calculated at the exchange rate of US$1/140 yen.
