Some students may prefer to make their own housing arrangements. However, please carefully note the overall housing shortage in Japan and the peculiarities of Japanese rental agreements.

Normal agreements can make apartment living in Japan a costly experience. Typically, a minimum of 300,000 yen is required as security deposit and 50% or less is refunded when you vacate the unit. Rent will run at about 50,000 yen per month. A real estate agent's handling fee is usually the equivalent of one month's rent. Furthermore, Japanese apartments in general are almost always completely unfurnished.

Nonetheless, a very limited number of places have been found in the vicinity of the university, with quite different arrangements from those mentioned above. These "unconventional accommodations" range from completely furnished units to some with a less expensive security deposit.
