College of Foreign Studies School of English Language and Communication
Pursuing development as a global citizen by combining high-level English proficiency with an additional field of expertise.
In addition to strong English and communication skills, students develop critical thinking and expressive abilities while acquiring specialized expertise aligned with their individual interests and goals. With the ability to use English freely as a tool, they cultivate an international mindset through study abroad and interaction with international students, gaining expertise that cannot be acquired through information in Japan or Japanese-language sources. This foundation allows them to see themselves from a global perspective, lays the groundwork for their future careers, and helps them to grow as international individuals.

Acquiring high-level English skills through proficiency-based classes
In small, proficiency-based classes, students refine their four core English skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while developing the critical thinking, expression, and research skills needed to learn specialized knowledge in English, ultimately acquiring practical English ability.
Class placement based on TOEIC score
TOEIC is used to determine placement in proficiency-based classes. Students can take the test on campus up to three times before graduation (free of charge). By setting target scores for each academic year, students experience consistent growth, steadily improving their English skills.
Target score | |
---|---|
First year | 560 |
Second year | 615 |
Third year | 650 |
Fourth year | 730 |
Independent study via e-learning
To improve English proficiency, including preparation for TOEIC, independent study via e-learning is also available. Students can access the materials anytime and work on practice tests and homework in line with their individual skill levels to enhance their English ability.

Deepening your expertise in the capstone course “Specialized Seminar.”
In their first year, students take basic courses. In their second year, they move on to intermediate-level courses. In their third and fourth years, they take advanced courses to deepen their expertise across four specialized fields—Language and Literature; Area, Culture, and Society; International Relations; and Economics and Business Administration. Students are free to choose their area of focus based on their interests and goals. These studies help build expertise relevant to their career paths and prepare them for more intensive learning during study abroad.
In their third and fourth years, students not only delve further into their chosen field via specialized seminars, but also enhance their research and practical skills through graduation projects and project-based seminars.
Broadening your cultural understanding via an exchange program
Students participate in study abroad after acquiring high-level English proficiency and sufficient academic skills to study in a bachelor’s program at their host university during their first and second years.
We offer a variety of study abroad programs such as a degree-seeking program, a two-country study abroad program, and an intensive language study program. The exchange program is central to the School of English Language and Communication, allowing students to take academic and liberal arts classes in English alongside local students at partner universities. They can choose courses related to their major or based on their own personal interests.
