Global Communication Studies Major

While enhancing proficiency in both English and Chinese, students acquire the ability to communicate with people from all over the world. In addition to language learning, they study a wide range of areas, cultures, ethnicities, and religions to develop the flexibility to be accepting of varying perspectives and also deepen their understanding of today’s global society. In doing so, they cultivate a rich sense of humanity and insight into others while exploring three areas of specialization, growing into global professionals who can serve as bridges between diverse cultures.

Learning English and Chinese to build a foundation in global communication

By studying English, the common language of the world, and Chinese, the language spoken by the most people, students cultivate a flexible and multifaceted outlook on the world. They also deepen their understanding of global and current issues via interdisciplinary study across three areas of study.

Communication Studies

Studying communication theory and techniques in depth and developing the skills to put them into practice.

Global Culture Studies

Studying diverse regional cultures, ethnic groups, and religions around the world to acquire profound intercultural understanding.

Global Society Studies

Building a foundation for global engagement by studying international affairs, business trends, and environmental issues.

Humanities Studies

Through the study of humanities such as literature, philosophy, art, and history, students cultivate insight into human nature and build a strong sense of humanity and communication-oriented understanding.

Cultivating experts in communication

In Communication Studies, students take classes that prepare them to become professionals in communication. By learning theories and methods related to communication with a diverse range of people and information media, and acquiring specialized skills, students gain the ability to serve as cultural bridges.

Cultivating deep intercultural understanding

In Global Culture Studies, students explore a wide range of topics related to the world’s regions, cultures, ethnic groups, and religions, acquiring deep intercultural understanding. They cultivate the ability to understand and be flexible in accepting various perspectives and cultures, and enhance the skills needed to work together with people from diverse backgrounds in today’s rapidly globalizing world.

Deepening cultural understanding for international success

In Global Society Studies, students broaden and deepen their knowledge and cultural understanding of today’s global society, studying not only language and culture but also international affairs, business trends, the SDGs, and environmental issues. They reflect on the various issues the world is currently facing and build the foundational skills necessary to effectively engage in seeking solutions on a global scale.

A wide variety of study abroad programs for both English and Chinese

In their second or third year, students may apply to participate in one-semester “English Study Abroad” and “Chinese Study Abroad” programs (subject to selection). Through academic study at their host university and everyday life in their host country, students enhance their practical communication skills and intercultural understanding.

Language and Communication

Studying English linguistics and applied linguistics for use in global communication contexts

This class covers a wide range of topics in English linguistics such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and information structure. Students also learn about applied linguistics in order to improve their understanding of the English language. The cultural, historical, and geographical contexts of the language are also studied to acquire cultural knowledge and strengthen international communication abilities.

Chinese Conversation I

Developing accurate pronunciation and basic communication skills in Chinese

This class focuses on introductory to basic-level Chinese, with a focus on conversation. Students gain a solid understanding of Pinyin, the Romanization system for Chinese, and develop accurate pronunciation through repeated listening and speaking practice. Via role-play, they learn an array of expressions essential for self-introductions, greetings, and everyday conversations, fostering the ability to engage in basic communication in Chinese.
