Traje académico of Coimbra
Hello, this is Maria from Portugal and I am going to introduce a traditional garment worn at my university.
The “traje académico” of Coimbra is a traditional garment used at ceremonies and events of my university.
The “traje académico” of Coimbra for female students is made up of a white shirt, a black skirt, a black jacket, a tie, black stockings and a cape. The “traje” for male students is made up of a vest, trousers instead of a skirt, a cassock instead of a jacket, and black socks instead of stockings.
The cape should be placed upon the shoulders when students pass through the “Porta Férrea” (a gate of great symbolism in Coimbra), inside the “Sala dos Capelos” (where doctoral theses are defended), in theory classes with a Professor and during academic ceremonies.
Students in Oporto and Lisbon also began wearing a “traje académico” towards the end of the 19th century. Nowadays, other Portuguese universities also use traditional garments for academic ceremonies.
