KGU makes history as it welcomes 550 international students in Fall 2022

The September entrance ceremony was held on August 26 at the Tanimoto Memorial Auditorium on the Nakamiya Campus. For the first time in two years, we were able to hold a face-to-face entrance ceremony.

 

Kansai Gaidai University has officially welcomed a total of 550 students, including two incoming graduate students and 15 third-year transfer students to the College of Global Communication and Language, and 533 students as Asian Studies Program from 32 countries and regions.

 

Quinn Teddy, an exchange student from Appalachian State University, read his pledge representing all the Asian Studies Program participants.

 

President Oba delivered a welcome message by stressing the significant of study abroad experience. “We can easily obtain a variety of information through the Internet, but this is not the same as actually learning and experiencing things in relation to society,” he stated.  He encouraged students to proactively take actions by saying, “The depth of understanding depends on the degree of engagement.  I hope that your engagement with Japan will bring you much success.”

 

Consul Neal Murata of the U.S. Consulate General in Osaka-Kobe extended a congratulatory message by referring to his own study abroad experience in Argentina.  He said, "Today, you have become ambassadors of your own country. I encourage you to study the Japanese language in depth. You will be able to make friends, understand Japanese values, and see the world from a Japanese perspective.” He continued, "Welcome to your wonderful adventure at Kansai Gaidai University. Your study abroad will help you to create a bright future.”

 

Professor Yoshiko Shikaura, Director of the Japanese Language Department, introduced unique differences in the meaning of Japanese terms in her speech.  The hall was full of laughter.  She concluded her remarks by saying " We will provide you with the best education possible, and we hope that you will work together with your fellow students to improve yourselves.

 

Students will study and explore Japan and Asia through our well-rounded program. The first face-to-face classes in two years has begun on August 29th with everyone’s sincere hope for a safe and rewarding semester.
