A New Chapter: KGU’s warm welcome to 505 international students
On August 27, despite concerns about the impact of a typhoon, KGU was able to hold an opening ceremony[FL1] for international students under clear skies. This semester, we warmly welcomed 505 international students from 34 countries and regions who are looking forward to life in Japan. The ceremony was full of smiles with performances by students at the end of the opening ceremony.
Most international students arrived at KGU between August 20 and 22 with eyes full of curiosity and hearts full of dreams. During the week leading up to the opening ceremony, some students looked a little tired as they went through various orientations to get used to their new environment. However, after the international students were admitted to KGU during the first part of the ceremony, even the nervous students had a sense of relief on their faces after President Oba gave a speech in which he advised the students to “respect the culture of the people around you, act on your initiative, and if you have any difficulties or problems, ask us for help anytime.”
After that, Mr. Akash Suri, Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Consulate General Osaka-Kobe, who was the guest of honor, gave a speech. He encouraged the students to have a meaningful study abroad experience, even though the experience of stepping out of one's comfort zone can sometimes be challenging.
Ms. Suzu Shimizu, who just graduated from KGU after two years of studying abroad, also gave a welcome speech. She said, “KGU is very supportive of students who are looking for new opportunities. I hope you will have a life-changing experience that will make you feel as if Japan is your second home.
At the end of the ceremony, Mr. Kaito Miyata[FL2] , a student from the College of Global Engagement, performed magic, and Ms. Zoe Phillips, also a student from the College of Global Engagement, sang a song titled, “Opportunity.” Their performances brought a special excitement to the ceremony and showed the vibrant and supportive community that KGU offers to students.
Welcome to KGU!
KGU wishes all international students an amazing experience in Japan.
