The one to three-year study abroad programs involve rigorous selection procedures. The selections in the past clearly indicate that we have been successful in sending qualified representatives, which is key to the successful operation of student exchange programs.

INTERNSHIPS IN JAPANESE LANGUAGE TEACHING

The primarily objective of this program is to provide our affiliated institutions with Japanese language teaching interns who can contribute to the development of a Japanese language department, or otherwise expand the existing Japanese language course offerings. Kansai Gaidai is fully responsible for the selection of well-qualified interns.

CREDENTIALS OF AN INTERN

  • Each intern candidate holds a B.A. degree from Kansai Gaidai with special training in English and Japanese language teaching. In order to be designated as an intern, a candidate must have first completed all of the required courses in the "Teacher Training Program" at Kansai Gaidai to be an English teacher in addition to the regular academic load required for graduation.
  • Candidates must also complete the required courses in the "Teaching Japanese as a Second Language Program" at Kansai Gaidai. Upon successful completion of these courses, the applicant goes on to further internship training in our Asian Studies Program, where Japanese language is rigorously taught to international students. During the internship program, students are carefully supervised by our Japanese Language instructors.
  • In most cases, our interns have had one-year study abroad experiences during their undergraduate program, and therefore, they should not have any problems in making necessary adjustments to the academic environment in a foreign country.

TYPICAL ARRANGEMENTS

Although the specific arrangements may somewhat differ institution by institution, the following are the typical arrangements for this program:

  • NORMAL TEACHING LOAD
    • 8 to 10 hours per week of teaching and preparation for teaching.
  • FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS
    • Stipend in the amount of US$4,000-5,000 for one academic year. Housing can be arranged in one of the on-campus residence halls.

While our interns are mainly interested in the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant, some of them may be interested in taking some undergraduate courses, or pursuing a Master's degree while working as an intern. In such cases, arrangements are made for our interns to receive tuition waivers.
